“I never travel far / without a little Big Star.”—Paul Westerberg
Mainstream success might have eluded the legendary Memphis band Big Star, but its three albums have become some of the most critically lauded and influential milestones in rock music. The band’s short existence—just four years—was fueled by genius and tragedy in equal measure. Its legacy lives on in heirs such as the Replacements, R.E.M., Elliott Smith, Belle & Sebastian, and countless others. The film is a treasure trove of rare music, never-seen-before footage, and in-depth interviews with original band members, family, friends, and artists Big Star influenced. (120 mins., DCP)
You won't have to travel far for a little more Big Star after the Friday screening: head over to The Tree Bar (887 Chambers Road) for a Big Star tribute featuring The Little Professors, The Mooncussers, Nate Farley, Zac Szymusiak, and Chad Lee Williams. Show starts around 10 PM and costs $5 at the door.
