Charlotte Rampling stars in Greek director Michael Cacoyannis's adaptation of Chekhov's classic play. "A labor of love...full of elegance and sophistication."ÛThe London Daily Mail

"Rampling has rarely delivered a more elegant performance"--The London Times

Greek director Michael Cacoyannis applies a wise and elegiac tone to his adaptation of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, basing it on his own new translation of the classic 1904 play. He adds a prologue set in Paris, but otherwise keeps the focus on the country manor of the debt-ridden Russian aristocrats, headed by Charlotte Rampling as the clan's fickle matriarch. As the New York Times remarks, "What makes this Cherry Orchard different from almost every other interpretation...is Ms. Rampling's extraordinarily rich portrait of Ranevskaya." The soundtrack features Tchaikovsky piano music played by Vladimir Ashkenazy. (137 mins.)
