Often compared to Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy from India, this seminal feature from Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) helped revolutionize cinema in its country.

The film chronicles the conflict that arises when a middle-class teacher falls for the daughter of his village's leading aristocratic family. (120 mins., 35mm)

Preservation funded by The Stanford Theatre Foundation.
