Assayas's homage to great Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien, HHH (1997; 93 mins.) screens alongside Hou's exquisite melodrama Flowers of Shanghai, which unfolds in a 19th-century brothel where flower girls and their "callers" practice elaborate rituals of social intercourse and consumerism.
