Introduced by Director Jay Rosenblatt
Visiting Filmmaker: Jay Rosenblatt
San Francisco-based filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt has carved out a unique aesthetic during a career spanning more than two decades. He is perhaps most associated with a series of deeply personal films that draw on found footage—newsreels, industrial films, home movies—and defy categorization by blending essay, documentary, and poetic forms. Rosenblatt's work has been the subject of recent retrospectives at such venues as the Museum of Modern Art and the Walker Art Center. His films screen regularly on the Sundance Channel, IFC, and HBO, as well as at festivals around the world.
We're pleased to announce that Jay Rosenblatt will be on hand to introduce this screening of his distinctive shorts in addition to his originally scheduled visit on April 30. Director Atom Egoyan calls him "an exquisite artist who makes beautifully crafted miniatures."
I Just Wanted to Be Somebody considers Anita Bryant's impact on the gay rights movement. (2006, 10 mins., video) The Smell of Burning Ants is a documentary on the pains of growing up male and the cruelties boys perpetuate and endure. (1994, 21 mins., 16mm) Human Remains depicts the banality of evil by documenting the most mundane details about Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Mussolini, and Franco. (1998, 30 mins., 16mm) King of the Jews is the director’s examination of anti-Semitism and his own fear of Christ, which uses Hollywood, educational, and religious films as points of departure. (2000, 18 mins., 16mm)
