In the Mirror of Maya Deren skillfully explores the life and work of avant-garde high priestess Deren, perhaps best known for such films as Meshes of the Afternoon (1943). In the Mirror of Maya Deren explores the life of Russian born avant garde filmmaker Maya Deren. Altough best known for her experimental films, Maya Deren was equally groundbreaking in her research into dance, ritual, and ethnography, interests that were reflected both in her films and in her seminal book, Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti (1953).

This compelling documentary portrait reacquaints audiences with Deren's legacy through interviews with her friends and associates (including her ex-husband, Sasha Hammid), clips from her completed films, and extensive footage of voodoo rituals she shot in Haiti. With music by John Zorn. (103 mins.)
