Ahmed Belkhodja of architecture and design firm Fala Atelier visits for this year’s DeeDee and Herb Glimcher Lecture, an annual series featuring the world’s leading artists, architects, and designers.
Fala focuses on residential design and has created most of their built work in Porto, Portugal, while also taking part in international exhibitions and competitions, lecturing, and teaching. Their work has been featured in such publications as Architectural Review and Domus, which named Fala one the world’s 50 best architecture firms in 2020.
Belkhodja founded Fala along with fellow architects Filipe Magalhães and Ana Luisa Soares when they were all just 25 years old. The practice has expanded over the last decade and now includes a fourth partner, Lera Samovich, along with architects Celeste Assal, Ana Lima, João Carlos Lopes, Eduardo Loureiro, Joana Sendas, and Catarina Vilarinho. A Q&A with Belkhodja, moderated by Ashley Bigham, of Outpost Office and assistant professor at Knowlton School, follows the talk.

Ahmed Belkhodja is an architect and cofounder of Fala. Born in 1990 in Switzerland, he studied architecture at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH). In addition to working at Fala, he has taught at the Royal College of Art in London and the University of Toronto, and currently teaches at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Geneva, and the National School of Architecture, City and Territories in Paris.
Fala is an architecture practice based in Porto, Portugal. Founded in 2013, Fala has lectured worldwide at different universities and institutions, including the Architectural Association School of Architecture, Royal Institute of British Architects, and Barbican in London; the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, New York; the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Chicago; Rice University, Houston; the Centre for Fine Arts (Bozar), Brussels; and Casa Dell'Architettura, Rome. Fala’s projects have been exhibited internationally, including at architecture biennials in Venice and Chicago, and published in Domus, Architectural Review, l'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, Arquitectura Viva, Bauwelt, and 2G. Among other honors, Fala was awarded the Spotlight Award by the Rice Design Alliance at Rice University in 2020.
