Eu danço—8 solos no geral
Eu danço—8 solos no geral
(I Dance, 8 Solos Overall)
Via Brasil is the Wexner Center’s multidisciplinary initiative focusing on contemporary art and culture in Brazil made possible by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
“A blend of hip-hop, urban, and contemporary dance [that] knocked the ball out of the park.”—New York Times
Don’t miss this sensational dance event, a major highlight of the Wexner Center’s cross-disciplinary focus on the best new artists of Brazil today. Leading Brazilian choreographer Sonia Destri Lie worked in ballet, theatre, musicals, and film before falling in love with the vibrant street dance styles of Rio de Janeiro. She founded Companhia Urbana de Dança in 2004, combining her contemporary dance aesthetics with the explosive hip-hop athleticism she found in that city’s favelas, where she discovered the dynamic group of dancers featured in this now-acclaimed ensemble.
Companhia Urbana de Dança will perform the US premiere of their recent full-evening work Eu danço—8 solos no geral. This title, which translates as “I Dance, 8 Solos Overall,” is a declaration of each company member’s pride in their own identity as a dancer, as well as a promise to contribute their individual skills to the overall impact of the group. As the New York Times noted of Destri Lie, “She dissected hip-hop and dismantled its trickery…to show how the dance form…could enter into the realm of art. Yet even though this is a company of soloists, the work exhibits an all-for-one mentality…the reason is Ms. Destri. The men can dance, but they are also lucky: she is their eye.”
This project is made possible in part by a grant from the National Performance Network’s Performing Americas Program, for which lead funding is provided by the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. For more information: www.npnweb.org.
