Free Wex Drive-In outdoor films begin June 20

A monster and his bride, a graduate, and a fox are all part of this year’s Wex Drive-In outdoor film series, which begins Thursday, June 20 with the Bride of Frankenstein (James Whale, 1935), continues Thursday, July 18 with The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967), and concludes Thursday, August 15 with Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson, 2009).

Admission is free; visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs starting at 8 pm. Screenings will begin at dusk (around 9 pm).

Wex Receives NEA Grant to Support Creative Residencies and Related Engagement Activities

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa has announced that the Wexner Center for the Arts is one of 817 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Wexner Center is recommended for a $60,000 grant to support creative residencies and commissions by the work of two artists, including related community engagement activities.

Blues for Smoke at the Wex this fall

This fall, the Wexner Center will devote the entirety of its gallery space to present Blues for Smoke, a major interdisciplinary exhibition exploring a wide range of contemporary art through the lens of the blues and “blues aesthetics.”  The exhibition, on view September 21–December 29, 2013, features works from more than 40 artists from the 1950s to the present, as well as materials from music and popular entertainment. Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, where it was on view at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA from October 21, 2012–January 7, 2013, the exhibition recently completed a run at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Comprehensive Paul Sietsema survey and immersive Shimon Attie video work on view this summer

The spring/summer exhibitions at the Wex will feature a pair of solo shows: Paul Sietsema, the most comprehensive account of the artist’s body of work to date in an exhibition organized by the Wexner Center, with a new work as its centerpiece; and Shimon Attie: MetroPAL.IS., an immersive multiple-channel HD video installation that tackles the Middle East conflict with characters cast from the Palestinian and Israeli communities in New York City. Both exhibitions will be on view at the Wexner Center for the Arts May 4–August 4, 2013. The Sietsema exhibition will tour to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago later this year.

Robots and Androids from Japan Take the Stage at Wex

Japan’s long-held fascination with robots, androids, and artificial intelligence bears fruit in two one-act plays from the Seinendan Theater Company + Osaka University Robot Theater Project, which will stage Sayonara and I, Worker, a pair of plays featuring interactions with domestic robots and a lifelike android, with both shows revealing the empathetic and emotional dimensions of these mechanized characters, at the Wexner Center January 31–February 2, 2013.

Field & Screen Returns by Popular Demand

Field & Screen, a film series now in its fourth year at the Wexner Center, returns with a full slate of films and other events to shed light on issues surrounding food and the environment, as well as the pleasures that can be had from both. This year, the monthlong series in February features a history of the environmental movement, a look at the radioactive aftermath following the 2011 tsunami in Japan, the story of two foragers, a panel discussion about our relationship to the animal world, and much more.
