Join cocurators Antonio Sergio Bessa and Yasmin Ramírez as they discuss the conception and development of our spring exhibition, Martin Wong: Human Instamatic.

Bessa is director of curatorial and education programs at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, where he has organized exhibitions on contemporary artists Joan Semmel and Paulo Bruscky, among others. An adjunct professor at Columbia University and the author of Öyvind Fahlström: The Art of Writing (Northwestern University Press), Bessa is also a noted expert on concrete poetry, a kind of verse championed by Fahlström that conveys meaning through visual as well as verbal means. He has edited numerous volumes on the subject.

Ramírez, an adjunct curator at the Bronx Museum, was previously adjunct curator at El Museo del Barrio and curator of Taller Boricua Gallery in Manhattan. A personal friend of Martin Wong, she has published several essays on his work, including “Martin Wong: Chino Malo,” in Fresh Talk/Daring Gazes: Conversations on Asian American Art (University of California Press) and “La Vida: The Life and Writings of Miguel Piñero in the Art of Martin Wong,” in Sweet Oblivion (New Museum of Contemporary Art).

After the talk, celebrate the exhibition’s opening at a free reception in our lower lobby and café. Click here for details and to RSVP.
