Artist's Talks

Informal presentations by artists.

Wed, Jan 10, 2007 4:30 PM

Best known for his hacked Nintendo cartridges, Cory Arcangel works in a variety of media--from video to sound to the Internet--to examine the relationship between technology, culture, and creativity.

Arcangel's art often takes such popular icons as Super Mario Bros. and Guns & Roses and hijacks this cultural "source code" to create a new aesthetic experience. He is known for adding performative and musical elements to his artist's talks and for this afternoon's talk, he'll be bringing a glockenspiel to accompany selected songs off of Bruce Springsteen's album Born to Run with newly created arrangements. Another highlight of the talk will be Arcangel's detailed audio-visual analysis of creatively modified footage from Simon & Garfunkel's famous 1981 Central Park concert. Arcangel's work has been exhibited at the 2004 Whitney Biennial, American Museum of the Moving Image, Tate Britain, and Team Gallery. You can see it here too: one of his projects is on view in The Box throughout January and another is featured in the Avant Gaming screening on January 10.
