Robert A. M. Stern and Paul Goldberger

Hear from renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern, who joins us in conversation with Pulitzer Prize–winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger for the next DeeDee and Herb Glimcher lecture.

A practicing architect, teacher, and writer, Robert A. M. Stern is the founder and senior partner of Robert A. M. Stern Architects (RAMSA). The 320-person, New York–based practice’s diverse portfolio of work ranges from 15 Central Park West and Comcast Center (the tallest building in Pennsylvania), to AVIC Uptown, a mixed-use project in Jinjiang, China. With a distinguished academic career that reflects a deep commitment to training the next generation of architects, Stern recently completed an 18-year term serving as Dean of the Yale School of Architecture. An avid writer and historian of his field, he has authored numerous books, including a five-volume study of New York architecture and urbanism from 1880 to 2000.

Stern and RAMSA have received numerous awards, including the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter’s President’s Award (2001), the Athena Award from the Congress for the New Urbanism (2007), the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum (2008), and the Richard H. Driehaus Prize for classical architecture (2011). Stern represented the United States three times at the Venice Biennale.

“Arguably the leading figure in architecture criticism” (Huffington Post), Paul Goldberger has enjoyed a storied career as an architecture critic for the New Yorker (1997–2011) and the New York Times (1973–2007). Currently a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, he holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School in New York City and was Dean of the Parsons School of Design. The author of dozens of books and essays on architecture, Goldberger’s most recent title is Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry (2015).
