Fast-formal Object: Flayed White, the monumental project Gustavo Godoy has developed for the Wex, engages the gallery space to both challenge and highlight the Wexner Center’s architecture.
His installations are simultaneously playful and replete with art historical references, recalling playgrounds you might remember from childhood as well as vanguard constructivist designs by such artists as El Lissitzky. Adhering to the constructivists’ principle of letting material dictate form, Godoy creates explosive angular structures with ordinary lumber and lighting. The piece he has created here continues the series of works he titles Fast-formal Objects, which foreground the rugged nature of his materials while also exuding a sense of polished elegance. Based in Los Angeles, Godoy has exhibited in California, New York, France, and Mexico.
The free brochure accompanying this exhibition includes an essay by Katy Reis, a curatorial assistant in exhibitions at the Wexner Center, who organized Godoy's exhibition.
Please Note
Gustavo Godoy intended for his construction Fast-formal Object: Flayed White to be interactive, with visitors invited to climb up into the sculpture itself. To ensure the safety of all our visitors, we ask that visitors who wish to experience the project in this way make an appointment to do so with Curatorial Assistant Katy M. Reis. You may schedule your appointment for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 10 and 11 am (except for holidays); to do so, please email creis@wexarts.org. We also require that you review and sign a waiver (available in the galleries or sent to you by email after you schedule your appointment) and bring it with you to your appointment. Parent or guardian signature on the waiver is required for all minors under the age of 18. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while interacting with the sculpture.
The Wexner Center for the Arts is committed to access for its programs, services, and exhibitions. Access may be limited by the nature of the program, service, or exhibition.
