The colorful sci-fi film Battle in Outer Space is full of some of the most impressive special effects the 1950s had to offer. And you can watch it tonight on a REALLY big screen in the cool comfort of Mershon Auditorium.
In the future (1965!), when Earth is attacked by aliens armed with antigravity rays and mind-control, humanity responds by launching two rocketships to attack the alien beachhead on the moon. With inventive space battles (including one between flying saucers and lunar tanks), the film is a splendid spectacle and possible influence on such later movies as Star Wars. In Japanese with English subtitles. (90 mins., 35mm)
Because of the extreme heat (and concerns about how it might impact the projector as well as the viewers), this Wex Drive-In screening is moving indoors to cool, air-conditioned Mershon Auditorium. But you can still come early to pick up a snack with Asian flair from the All American Grill food truck before the film, and take it into Mershon Lobby, where we'll have beverages available for purchase and tables to perch at. Doors open at 7:30 PM. And you can still get your Jeni's before the show too. We'll be giving out free popcorn from Pam's Market Popcorn, as well, but after the show (since you can't bring food or drink into the theater).
