Blood Money is one of the best--if shamefully seldom seen--daring dramas of Hollywood's "pre-Code" days. Maddin has a special fondness for this era, as you’ll know if you are already familiar with his "Jolly Corner" column in Film Comment. Set in a Los Angeles underworld populated by corrupt politicians, cross-dressers, and pool sharks, it follows a crooked bail bondsman (George Bancroft) who falls for his client, a rich nymphomaniac arrested for shoplifting (Francis Dee). Carl Theodor Dreyer's masterpiece Day of Wrath appears to inform all of Maddin's films, perhaps none more so than Careful. Day of Wrath is a tale of repression and paranoia filmed in Denmark during the Nazi occupation. Set during a time of witch hunts in a 17th-century village, the film follows the tragedy that results when a young minister's wife falls for her grown stepson. (97 mins., 35mm)
