Bluebeard

Catherine Breillat, 2009

In Bluebeard, noted French provocateur Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl) tells a personal, almost classical tale. Sometime in the 1950s, two young sisters enjoy hiding out in the attic to frighten themselves by reading the grisly 17th-century fairytale of Bluebeard, an aristocratic ogre who marries and murders a series of wives. As the two sisters read the story (providing amusing commentaries and interpretations of the tale throughout), a stylized version of the fairytale is acted out on screen as another pair of sisters have to deal with the actual Bluebeard of legend. Breillat’s film shows how children often crave stories that terrify them as well as the pleasure to be had from facing your fears head-on. (80 mins., video)
