“Of all of Renoir’s films Monsieur Lange is the most spontaneous, the richest in miracles of camera work, the most full of pure beauty and truth. In short, it is a film touched by divine grace.”—François Truffaut
In The Crime of Monsieur Lange, by the great humanist director Jean Renoir (The Rules of the Game), the employees of a small publisher form a cooperative to keep it running when their lascivious miser of a boss disappears ahead of his creditors. The company is thriving on the strength of a clerk’s American-style cowboy stories when who should reappear to retake his place at the head of the company? The French classic features new subtitles supervised by Bruce Goldstein, who’ll discuss the history and art of subtitling following the screening. (80 mins., 4K DCP)
Restored in 4K by Cineteca di Bologna, under the supervision of STUDIOCANAL, with the support of the Centre National du Cinéma.
