Trace the evolution of a major innovator in the world of contemporary dance over three decades of risk and discovery in this transporting new documentary. Making great use of 3D film and its capabilities, this immersive and enthralling portrait of Merce Cunningham mixes archival footage with excerpts from 14 restagings of some of Cunningham’s most significant choreographies performed by fixtures of his pioneering company. Cunningham and his partner John Cage received the Wexner Prize in 1993, and the center’s long history of presenting his work makes the screening of this cinematic tribute especially poignant. (93 mins., 3D DCP)
Join us after Saturday’s 4 PM screening for a panel discussion with three distinguished faculty from Ohio State’s top-rated Department of Dance who worked with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. David Covey, Karen Eliot, and Daniel Roberts will provide memories of their experiences with the company and insights into Cunningham’s work and legacy; the discussion will be moderated by the Wexner Center’s Director of Performing Arts Lane Czaplinski.
