“The fulfillment of a cherished counterculture dream, the acid western.” —Jonathan Rosenbaum on Dead Man

Get an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at two of The Criterion Collection’s recent restorations—Dead Man and Tom Jones (which screens Sunday)—from the company’s own Lee Kline, Cara Shatzman, and Russell Smith. Following the presentation, enjoy the newly revitalized Dead Man, Ohio-native Jim Jarmusch’s stylish, revisionist take on the western. Featuring a cast that includes Robert Mitchum, Crispin Glover, Gary Farmer, John Hurt, and Iggy Pop, the cult film stars Johnny Depp as William Blake, a mild-mannered accountant from Cleveland who ends up falsely accused of murder after arriving in a frontier town for a nonexistent new job. The visually haunting, black-and-white period piece is made even more atmospheric by Neil Young’s eerie, improvised score. (120 mins., 4K DCP)
