I Used to Be Darker

I Used to Be Darker is a story of people finding and letting each other go, looking for love where they’ve found it before and—when that doesn’t work—figuring out where they might find it next. In the latest film from Matt Porterfield, the director of Putty Hill and recipient of the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Residency Award for 2012–13, Taryn has run away from her Northern Irish home, trying to escape the mess of her life by staying with her aunt and uncle in Baltimore. But it turns out that she’s walked into another type of mess as her relatives are trying to handle the end of their marriage gracefully for the sake of their daughter Abby, just home from her first year of college. Musicians Kim Taylor and Ned Oldham (brother of frequent Wex performer Will Oldham) give sensitive performances as the divorcing couple and the film beautifully features music by each actor. The Cincinnati-based Taylor will be here to answer questions after the screening and maybe even perform a few songs off her new album, Love’s a Dog. (90 mins., DCP)
