La nuit fantastique Remorques

Double Feature

wex grid image fill

Marcel l'Herbier's La nuit fantastique and Jean Gremillon's Remorques both tell bittersweet love stories.

Second feature start time: 9 pm. From one of French cinema's master directors, La nuit fantastique is a delightful addition to the body of surrealist fantasies. The film tells the story of a flower-seller following his dream girl around town, lapsing in and out of both absurdity and enchantment. (Marcel l'Herbier, 1942; 103 mins.)

Although it's blessed with stunning shots of the Brittany coast, the enormously successful Remorques was plagued by production problems. It reunites Jean Gabin and Michele Morgan as adulterous lovers imperiled by the treachery of the sea. (Jean Gremillon, 1941; 81 mins.)

Series organized by Marie Bonnel, French Cultural Services, New York.
