The Lacemaker

Claude Goretta, 1977

Tonight's feature, one of Huppert's earliest works, is arguably the film that made her a star. Claude Goretta's The Lacemaker (La dentelliere) references in its title the Vermeer portrait of a quiet young woman. Huppert plays an unschooled hairdresser in Paris who falls in love with an equally shy student far above her in his family background. Ultimately, the class difference proves ruinous, her fate genuinely heartbreaking. (35mm, 108 mins.)
