Each year at Zoom, we try to show a classic silent film, often with live music, and this year we’ve got something very special in store for you. The silent era produced some of the greatest—and most timeless and universal—comedians in the history of the movies. Tonight we’ll be showing three side-splitting films. Big Business (1929) offers the duo of Laurel and Hardy as door-to-door Christmas tree salesmen and is perhaps their funniest film. Go West (1923), a western by Hal Roach (who created The Little Rascals), features a zany all-animal cast. In Movie Night (1929), the under-appreciated comedian Charley Chase’s movie night with his family is (hilariously) ruined by his daughter’s case of the hiccups. (app. 60 mins., 35mm and video) As an extra treat, we’ll have live music provided by Super Desserts, a Columbus folk pop band whose sound features an array of instruments that are fun to watch, as well as listen to, including banjo, bass clarinet, cello, glockenspiel, piano, sitar, violin, and viola.
