(It was originally released in the U.S. in a clumsily reedited version.) Based on Guiseppe di Lampedusa's acclaimed novel about the decline of a Sicilian prince and the aristocratic values he embodies, Italian master Luchino Visconti's sumptuous film stars Burt Lancaster in what he regarded as his finest work. Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale costar. A clear influence on the work of Martin Scorsese, The Leopard concludes with a 45-minute ballroom sequence hailed by critic Dave Kehr as "one of the most moving meditations on individual mortality in the history of cinema."
