"Renaissance riot grrrl rising"--Film Comment

Portland-based Miranda July collaborates with sound artist Zac Love on The Swan Tool, her latest multimedia performance. This category-defying piece combines performance art, filmmaking, live music, and digital technology to tell the story of a despondent insurance company employee who tries to lead a normal life after burying herself in her backyard. Interacting with images projected on screens in front of and behind her, July is literally inside her own movie, exploring a character dissected by spaces of fantasy and reality, above and below.

July first came to attention in 1995 through her girls-only grassroots video and short film distribution network. She recently directed a Sleater-Kinney music video and shared a story credit on Wayne Wang's controversial new film, The Center of the World. July developed The Swan Tool as part of a residency at the Wexner Center's Art and Technology facility.

Copresented with Ohio State's Department of Dance.
