Man of Marble

Wajda's fascinating expose of the perils of idealism also exposes the constantly shifting obstructions to creative expression thrown up as roadblocks by the Communist authorities.

The story follows a young female film student attempting to make a documentary on a working-class hero silenced by the Soviet-controlled regime. Although the initial script was completed in 1963, the film could not be made for another 14 years, due to exactly the kind of political roadblock it dramatizes. (153 mins., 35mm)
