Tonight we mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with an unusual pairing of Communist-themed films.

Michael Curtiz's Mission to Moscow stars Walter Huston as real-life U.S. ambassador Joseph Davies who finds that Stalin and the Communists aren’t half-bad during his visit to the country. Produced to build popular support for the Soviet Union during WWII, the film was used as evidence of Hollywood subversion during the HUAC hearings. (123 mins., 35mm)

The Last Bolshevik is Chris Marker's moving and provocative portrait of the late Russian filmmaker Alexander Medvedkin. While paying tribute to the great Soviet-era filmmaker, Marker also chronicles the history of Soviet cinema and the country itself in his typically poetic and eloquent manner. (116 mins., video)
