In The Mistake, a man from Hamburg is arrested and deported when he is betrayed while secretly trying to visit his girlfriend in East Germany. The girlfriend knows who the informer is and begins to plot her revenge. From the director of The Legend of Paul and Paula. (100 mins., 35mm)

One of the most radically critical depictions of the GDR, Land beyond the Rainbow centers on the mythical village of Stalina, where, in 1953, the villagers rationalize injustice and their own despair by glorifying "real existing socialism." (89 mins., 35mm)

Cosponsored by Ohio State's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and Center for Slavic and East European Studies. Special thanks to Senior Lecturer Andy Spencer.

Organized by the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
