Michael House, 2009

This double feature offers the first appearance of French filmmaker Jacques Tati’s inimitable alter ego and a documentary that’s a must for any fan of Tati’s comic genius.

Mr. Hulot’s Holiday, the film in which Tati introduces his famed persona, unfolds in a wordless series of brilliantly inventive sight gags and humorous vignettes. This classic has never looked better thanks to a new restoration, which premiered at the most recent Cannes Film Festival. (88 mins., 35mm)

The Magnificent Tati traces the director’s rise from the Parisian music hall to his Oscar-winning films of the 1950s and his financial ruin in the wake of Playtime, his ambitious masterpiece. Featuring interviews with Mike Mills, Frank Black, Sylvain Chomet, and many others. (60 mins., video)
