Marked by extreme poverty, heroin trafficking, and an often-violent separatist insurgency, the Indian state of Manipur was an unlikely place for baseball to take root. But take root it did after American GIs introduced the game in World War II. The Only Real Game portrays the passion for baseball among the men and women of Manipur, as well as US efforts to send equipment and coaches in order to help further the game’s popularity there, even amid the severe hardships endured every day by the locals.
