This charming film is set during the papal fever that consumed the Uruguayan border town of Melo as speculation mounted that as many as 50,000 Brazilians would arrive for John Paul II's 1988 visit. The impoverished town looks for ways to use this occasion to boost its economy by setting up stalls selling chorizo and cakes. A resourceful smuggler comes up with a get-rich-quick scheme to build a washroom in front of his house that the impending crowds will be able to use for a small charge. Of course, as the tension mounts, anything that can go wrong does in this compelling portrait of a family and community trying to escape grinding poverty. (90 mins., 35mm)
