Program Two Dr. Dyonelio Cancer Jardim de Guerra

The second night of rare films accompanying the Helio Oiticica: Quasi-cinemas exhibition features films by the great Latin American director Glauber Rocha and Oiticica collaborator Neville D'Almeida.

The writer Dyonelio Axe is the subject of Dr. Dyonelio, which Oiticica helped the director Ivan Cardoso to complete. (1978, 11 mins.)

One of the greatest Latin American directors, Glauber Rocha infused political filmmaking of the 1960s and 70s with a stunning aesthetic sense derived from Brazilian culture. Until his untimely death in 1981, his work was among the exciting and inspiring contributions being made to a new global cinema. Cancer is Rocha's account of a small group of actors who, over four days in 1968, improvised among themselves on the subject of sexual, psychological, and racial violence. The results were edited together four years later, with Oiticica emerging as one of the memorable participants. (1968-72, 86 mins.)
