From Russia, one of cinema's great works of science fiction. Based on sci-fi writer Stanislaw Lem's novel, Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris is often referred to as the filmmaker's response to Stanley Kubrick's 2001. Although both are visually stunning, wide-screen stories involving futuristic space stations and troubled astronauts set on perilous missions, Solaris is ultimately about the protagonist's desperate search for lost love and his inability to prevent it from slipping away. Like Steven Soderbergh's recent remake, Tarkovsky's enormously influential original version aims at nothing less than acknowledging a human being's ceaseless search for the absolute.
