Stray Dogs

(Tsai Ming-liang, 2013)

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Venice, Stray Dogs is a haunting, audacious tale of existence on the margins of Taipei from the great Tsai Ming-liang (What Time Is It There?, Goodbye, Dragon Inn). In it, a father and his two children wander the city looking for free food samples, take shelter in abandoned buildings, or make money as a “human billboard.” Tsai pushes his austere minimalism to new extremes in this film, masterfully chronicling both “social realities and darkly comic dreams of despair” (Film Comment). (138 mins., DCP)
