The Killers

Catch actor and former President Ronald Reagan at two critical moments in this double bill inspired by J. Hoberman’s Make My Day: Movie Culture in the Age of Reagan (2019).

“A Time for Choosing,” a filmed speech by Reagan on behalf of ultraconservative Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, didn’t help Goldwater beat Lyndon B. Johnson, but it did cast Reagan into the national spotlight as a potential political figure. (29:30 mins., video)

An adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s short story of the same name, hardboiled crime thriller The Killers stars Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, and mob boss Ronald Reagan as three corners of a twisted love triangle at the center of a high-stakes robbery scheme. Reagan was so concerned about being portrayed as a sleazy criminal that he asked to stop the film from being released. (95 mins., 4K DCP) Both sides of the Reagan coin in one night!
