We Will Not Grow Old Together Le Garcu

Double Feature

wex grid image fill

Pialat examines aspects of his own life in these two brutally honest films.

Second feature start time: 9 pm. A brutally honest look in the mirror, We Will Not Grow Old Together charts the collapse of the long-term relationship between a dominating filmmaker and the less-secure, less-educated woman who loves him. The film features Jean Yanne and Marlene Jobert and is based on Pialat's own novel. (1972; 107 mins.)

Pialat's final film, Le Garcu, stars Depardieu as a stand-in for the director. It's an unflinching portrait of a man wanting to leave his wife and his small son for his mistress (with Pialat's only child playing the boy). As Film Comment notes, Pialat's "urge to return to the autobiographical vein arose...from a desire to explore the event that most deeply affected his final years: the birth of his first child." (1995; 102 mins.)

The Maurice Pialat retrospective was organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center with the support of French Cultural Services (New York) and the Bureau du Cinema, Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres, Paris.
