Where Soldiers Come From

Where Soldiers Come From is an intimate portrait of the people who fight our wars, their families, and the towns and cities from which they come. Director Heather Courtney focuses on a group of childhood friends who join the National Guard after high school, following them as they evolve from typical teenagers into soldiers placed in dangerous combat situations, and eventually 23-year-old vets trying to restart their respective lives. Stay after the screening for a conversation between Courtney and Dominic Fredianelli, one of the young men featured in the film. (90 mins., DCP)

The film is screened as part of Responsibility, Morality, and the Costs of War, a symposium organized by Ohio State’s Department of Theatre. Join us before the screening at 2:30 PM for the symposium’s opening remarks, and stay after the screening for a panel discussion with Heather Courtney; artist Dominic Fredianelli, who is featured in the film; Mike Carrell, assistant provost, Ohio State’s Office of Military and Veterans Services; and Genevieve Chase, founder of American Women Veterans. The panel is moderated by Jennifer Siegel, associate professor in Ohio State’s Department of History. The symposium continues through Saturday, November 14, at the Drake Performance and Event Center.
