Tonight's screening is introduced by Judith Mayne, Ohio State's Professor of French and women's studies and author of Directed by Dorothy Arzner (1994), the definitive critical biography of the director. Arzner's first talkie, The Wild Party was also the sound debut for its star, original "It Girl" Clara Bow. She plays a high-spirited coed whose anthropology professor/boyfriend forces her to mend her ways. (1929; 77 mins.)

The pre-Code Honor among Lovers is a stylish Jazz Age look at love and fidelity set in penthouse suites and Long Island speakeasies. With Claudette Colbert, Fredric March, and Ginger Rogers. (1931; 75 mins.)

Event Support

Directed by Dorothy Arzner was conceived by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. With the cooperation of Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios the archive has preserved Arzner's six extant films for Paramount from nitrate projection prints or acetate positives. None of the original negatives has survived. Preservation of the films was made possible with generous support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Myra Reinhard Family Foundation, and Jodie Foster.
