When paired together, Pine Barrens and Sun Tunnels illustrate Holt's lifelong fascination with sight, horizon lines, and the limits and possibilities of human perception.
Cinéseries presents two films by Nancy Holt (1938–2014), Pine Barrens (31 mins., 1975) and Sun Tunnels (26 mins., 1978). Pine Barrens tracks Holt's travels through the sandy plains of the New Jersey wilderness; the local population's voices and music soundtrack the film. Sun Tunnels documents the construction of Holt's earthwork of the same name, a sculpture of concrete cylinders in the desolate and expansive Great Basin Desert of Utah. The truck drivers, engineers, astronomers, and concrete pourers whose labor made the monumental artwork possible are as much the subject of the film as the astounding desert landscape. Curated by Cinéseries member Alex Trippe. (program approx. 57 mins., digital video)
Join us after the screening for informal conversation and gathering organized by student group Cinéseries!

In the words of the members: Cinéseries is a student-led group that organizes monthly screenings in collaboration with the Wexner Center for the Arts. We aim to offer a space for students and the community to engage with film and expanded cinema from makers from a variety of backgrounds. We aspire to create an environment conducive to critical engagement by inviting filmmakers to showcase work that takes risks, challenges norms, and opens a conversation by devoting to a wide range of artist-centered and independent media.
