"I think something in my soul keeps telling me I'm supposed to be a musician"--Jim Jarmusch
Jarmusch's fascinating portrait of Neil Young and his band Crazy Horse is infused with the enthusiasm of a fan and the understanding of an insider.
Jarmusch is a great friend and fan of musicians.
He has cast the likes of Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins in his films. His soundtracks feature contributions from popular musicians (Neil Young, RZA) and actors (frequent collaborator John Lurie), as well as his own compositions (on Permanent Vacation).
Year of the Horse captures Neil Young's 1996 tour with his band Crazy Horse. Intercut with interviews and archival footage, Jarmusch's tribute to the singer offers an unforgettable portrait of a rock legend. (1997; 107 mins.)
The Clint Eastwood-produced Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser also offers riveting performance footage, in this instance of the inimitable, magnificent jazz pianist (who Jarmusch is a big fan of as well). (Charlotte Zwerin, 1989; 89 mins.)
