Rodney Evans

In 2001, Rodney Evans (b. 1971) borrowed the Film/Video Studio’s 16mm Aaton film camera to shoot Brother to Brother (2004), a narrative feature about a gay black artist who crosses paths with Harlem Renaissance poet Richard Bruce Nugent. In 2018, Evans came to the Studio for a postproduction residency to finish Vision Portraits (2019), a documentary that explores how artists, including the filmmaker, find ways to expand their artistic practice despite their visual impairments. Brother to Brother won a Special Jury Prize when it premiered at Sundance, and Vision Portraits premiered at SXSW.

Brother to Brother screened at the Wex on August 23, 2018; Vision Portraits was shown as part of Picture Lock on November 2, 2019.
