"A charismatic innovator...the effect is hypnotic."--Sunday Telegraph "Kaash is startling, original, and beautiful."--Guardian Wexner Center audiences witnessed the electrifying U.S. debut of rising British dancer/choreographer Akram Khan here in 2001. That success led to our co-commissioning Kaash, Khan's first full-evening work. Kaash is the Hindi word for "if." It's also the title of Akram Khan's first full-evening work, co-commisioned by the Wexner Center. This collaboration with acclaimed artist Anish Kapoor also features atmospheric music by Asian Underground electronicist Nitin Sawhney and an ensemble of five dancers. Kaash has earned critical raves for its seamless fusion of movement drawn from classical Indian kathak forms and contemporary ideas, juxtaposing bursts of whirling speed with sections of serene, calligraphic grace. The Guardian noted, "The beauty of his dancing, the absoluteness of his control hold the theater breathless...Kaash is startling, original, and beautiful." Coproduced by the Wexner Center, The South Bank Centre, The Tramway, The Vooruit, Sampad, DanceEast, and Maison Des Arts Creteil. Sponsor, Fellow, and Donor Circles members are entitled to two free tickets to Akram Khan Company as a benefit of their membership (subject to availability).
