"The songs crest and breathe and crest again."—New York Times Swedish singer/songwriter José González has packed the house here as a solo exemplar of today’s forward-looking folk trends on two past visits. Now he returns as part of the trio Junip, with Tobias Winterkorn providing organ grooves or swooping synth lines and drummer Elias Araya. The band gives González’s songs a much broader musical dynamic not unlike the territory explored by Iron and Wine. With Junip, his reflective, shaded lyrics and nimble guitar lines—influenced by classical playing and revered folk modernists such as Nick Drake and Bert Jansch—are buoyed by sympathetic rhythms and melodic embellishments that lift his appealingly spare minimalism to new heights. Rising Brooklyn indie-poppers Acrylics, who first got together at Oberlin College, open.
