LA-based, Columbus-raised musician Don Carlos leads us on an exhilarating journey with Ill Atmospherics, his live electronic dance project that blends the power of acoustic breakbeat drumming with synths and samplers. Stay tuned after the performance for a live Q&A with the artist.
Ill Atmospherics has accomplished the difficult task of unifying live instrumentation with electronics to create original tracks, remixes, mash-ups, and everything in between. That said, Carlos doesn’t need to explain why he has the following he’s built. With this compelling chemistry, he’s launched a new genre—Drum Spin—that draws from the ethos of the world’s great electronic musicians.
At an Ill Atmospherics performance there is a message: to let people experience the feeling of freeness and free thought; to let the music take you on a spiritual journey through frequencies and wavelengths while being hypnotized by rhythmic drum patterns. With the today’s ever-evolving technology and Ill Atmospherics’ internal drive to constantly reach for the next level, there are no boundaries or limits to where the “The IA Crew” will go in this century.
Ill Atmospherics performs using percussion, synthesizers, samplers, and the undeniable power of live drums to create the unique sounds of Drum Spin. Under the leadership of Don Carlos (known for his works with the Charles Cooper Quartet, Foley, Titonton, Kettle, Triggahappy, and Flypaper), Ill Atmospherics has played alongside the likes of Lone Catalysts, Mos Def, DJ Hi-Tek, Mood, Talib Kweli, George Acosta, DJ Soul Slinger, AK1200, Faust & Shortee, and Crizzly, just to name a few.
More about Wex[EP] As today’s vocabulary has expanded to include “social distancing” and “essential businesses,” the Wex has entered into a conversation with some of our favorite local artists to bring you Essential Performances. With a nod to the short-form, often experimental nature of extended-play records, the Wex[EP] series seeks to document a facet of each artist’s practice and explore innovative ways of communing with one another during this rupture of routine.
Join us on Thursdays as we chart a better tomorrow with the thinkers, players, movers, and makers to whom we continue to look for joy and inspiration. If you are able, please consider supporting each artist by using the links located on this page. View the Wex[EP] lineup.
