Ohio Humanities and Wexner Center for the Arts announce a call for entries for the 2024 Ohio Humanities Film Fellowship

Ohio Humanities and the Wexner Center for the Arts continue their three-year partnership to support nonfiction storytelling around and about Ohio with a call for entries for the 2024 Ohio Humanities Film Fellowship.

The fellowship program assists independent filmmakers working on documentaries informed by the humanities. It provides funding of up to $5000 as well as support and mentorship from the Wex’s Film/Video staff. The fellowship will support up to five fellows at the Wex each year.

“Ohio Humanities is excited to continue our relationship with the Wexner Center for the Arts to support emerging filmmakers,” says Ohio Humanities Executive Director Rebecca Brown Asmo. “Documentary films provide a unique way of connecting Ohioans and strengthening communities through storytelling.” 

Eligible projects must have a connection to Ohio or cover a topic that is highly relevant to Ohioans. Humanities-informed documentary film projects engage audiences with ideas and frameworks that tell stories of our shared human experience and help bridge divides.

The filmmakers selected for 2024 will follow in the footsteps of the inaugural group of Ohio Humanities Film Fellows: Mary Jo Bole, who’s just completed her first documentary, Family White Elephants; Zeinabu irene Davis, who’s in pre-production on Stars of the Northern Sky; and Ruun Nuur, who’s in the process of initiating the restoration of a historically important film from her homeland of Somalia.

“The work that Mary Jo, Zeinabu, and Ruun have completed on their respective projects reinforces the cultural value of this rewarding partnership,” says Wexner Center Film/Video Studio Director Jennifer Lange. “Each reflects a unique approach to sharing meaningful stories with Ohio ties, and the fellowship program has allowed us to deepen our support and promotion of their efforts. We look forward to discovering what’s ahead with the next group of fellows.”

A submissions portal and more information about entry guidelines is available at wexarts.org and through Ohio Humanities. Entries for 2024 fellowships are due no later than Monday, December 4. 

Filmmakers chosen for the fellowship will be notified in February.
