“A promising artistic voice.”—The New York Times, naming this show one of the highlights of the dance season
Canadian dance company Kidd Pivot, led by rising-star choreographer Crystal Pite—also a former member of William Forsythe’s famed Frankfurt Ballet—makes its Columbus debut with the new work Lost Action in Ohio State’s Thurber Theatre Tuesday, September 29 at 8 pm. Presented by the Wexner Center, the 70-minute work is a dynamic rumination on love and loss, emotionally charged and thrilling in its virtuosic physicality.
Taking its title from military terminology drawn from the field of combat, Lost Action builds images of interpersonal engagement, dissolving relationships and mourning with rapid-fire phrases that quickly shift from loose subtlety to fierce bursts of kinetic energy.
Dance audiences who were engaged by the choreographic inquiry in the Wexner Center exhibition William Forsythe: Transfigurations (in spring of 2009) will be intrigued to see how Crystal Pite and Kidd Pivot take Forsythe’s ideas in fresh directions. The Globe and Mail called this ensemble “always inventive…positively brilliant.”

Pite has danced with the Ballet British Columbia, the Alberta Ballet, and the Frankfurt Ballet under the direction of William Forsythe. She currently serves as associate choreographer of the prestigious Nederlands Dans Theater. In 1995 she was the youngest person to ever receive the prestigious Clifford E. Lee Choreographic Award. While at the Wexner Center, Pite offered a master class in technique to students in Ohio State’s Department of Dance. At the session students also had the opportunity to hear how Pite’s experience with the Frankfurt Ballet served as a touchstone to developing her own approach to dance making.
