3rd Annual Wexner Center Director’s Dialogue on Art and Social Change
Columbus, OH—Leading artists and writers will convene at the Wexner Center on Wednesday, May 21 for the third annual Director’s Dialogue on Art and Social Change. This year’s Dialogue is “After the Revolution,” and aims to assess the progress women have made in the art world and the challenges they still face. The talk will begin at 7pm in the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Theater and is free and open to the public.
The panel will feature the authors of After the Revolution: Women Who Transformed Contemporary Art: Eleanor Heartney, Helaine Posner, Nancy Princenthal, and Sue Scott. Joining these noted art critics and curators is acclaimed artist Ann Hamilton, an Ohio State University art professor and one of the 12 artists featured in the book. A booksigning and reception with the panel will be held in the Wexner Center’s lower lobby at 6 pm.
Notes Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin, “The contemporary arts can and do serve as a catalyst for social change, in ways both obvious and subtle. We believe that the After the Revolution panel discussion will provide a wonderful opportunity to more closely explore the trajectory and influence of women in the arts, through the lens of an illustrious group of critics, art historians, and artists.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR’S DIALOGUE
The Director’s Dialogue series, made possible by a lead endowment gift from an anonymous donor, is designed to explore the crucial role of the arts as a springboard for discourse on contemporary issues and as a catalyst for social change. Building on a loose definition of “dialogue,” each year’s program convenes a conversation among multiple voices, drawing on the expertise of artists, academics, and opinion leaders in a variety of fields to address the most significant social issues of the day. The inaugural dialogue in 2006 was in connection with a screening of The Gender Chip Project and the 2007 Director’s Dialogue was called Race Matters and centered on the issues of cultural conflict, identity politics, and expressive freedom.
