Curator, author, and philanthropist Toby Devan Lewis is the guiding force who shaped the Cleveland-based Progressive Corporation’s world-class art collection. She’ll be signing copies of ArtWorks: The Progressive Collection, an impressive new volume that features a 300-work cross-section of the more than 6000 works in the Progressive art collection. A long-time champion of artist Kerry James Marshall, she selected his work for that collection, and her visit coincides with his Every Beat of My Heart exhibition and performances. In addition to Marshall, artists represented in the book include Vito Acconci, Tina Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Frank Gehry, Nan Goldin, Andy Goldsworthy, David Hockney, Sherrie Levine, Takashi Murakami, Cindy Sherman, Richard Tuttle, and Andy Warhol, among many others. Lewis is the recipient of the 2007 Cleveland Arts Prize/Martha Joseph Citation for Distinguished Service to the Arts and the Award of Excellence from the International Association for Professional Art Advisors (IAPAA). In 1998 she was honored by the New Museum for her "significant contribution in bringing the visual arts and creative experience to the work environment." In ArtWorks, she brings an insiders’ perspective to her thoughtful chronological account of the Progressive collection’s development. Other contributors to the book are Dan Cameron, who discusses both the works themselves and the concept of corporate collecting; Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison, who provides the insightful foreword; and Peter B. Lewis, the collection's founder.
