Criticizing Photographs: An Introduction to Understanding Images

OSU Professor Terry Barrett leads this teacher workshop developed to complement the exhibition Visions from America on view at The Belmont Building from May 22 to August 15, 2004. Drawing from his book Criticizing Photographs, author Terry Barrett, professor of art education at The Ohio State University, introduces participants to the processes of describing, interpreting, and evaluating photographs through an interactive exploration of works in the Visions from America exhibition. In practicing these processes, teachers gain a foundation for writing and talking about photographs. Professor Barrett also suggests strategies for using art criticism to increase student proficiency in oral and written communication.
