Noted artist, writer, and activist Gregg Bordowitz presents an analysis of the Bush administration's ambivalent AIDS policies, which he contends are more consistent with its militaristic agenda than compassionate conservatism. Bordowitz will sign copies of his recent book, The AIDS Crisis Is Ridiculous and Other Writings, 1986ñ2003, after the lecture. Addressing the role of death in social life today, Bordowitz also explores the potential response of art, culture, and in particular sexual politics to societal repression exercised in the name of security. Bordowitz is a film and video artist whose best-known works, Fast Trip Long Drop (1993) and Habit (2001), address AIDS globally and personally. His recent book, The AIDS Crisis Is Ridiculous and Other Writings, 1986ñ2003, collects his essays about the HIV epidemic, tracing the underlying ideas of his artistic practice. Bordowitz is an associate professor in the film, video, and new media department at the Art Institute of Chicago.
